Kourou

Kourou holds one of the more genuinely surprising facts in global geography: Europe's primary spaceport sits not in Europe at all, but on South America's northern coast, inside French Guiana, an overseas department of France. The European Space Agency has launched from the Guiana Space Centre since 1968, and the choice of location was never arbitrary, it comes down to orbital mechanics that few other sites on Earth can match.

Kourou sits just 5 degrees north of the equator, and at that latitude, Earth's own rotational speed is close to its maximum, roughly 1,670 kilometers per hour at the equator itself. A rocket launched eastward from here gets a genuine velocity boost from that rotation, meaningfully reducing the fuel needed to reach orbit compared to launches from higher-latitude sites like Florida's Cape Canaveral or Russia's Baikonur. That physics advantage, combined with France's territorial claim to the region, made Kourou the natural choice once Europe needed its own launch capability independent of American or Soviet facilities.

The center runs public tours on non-launch days, walking visitors through assembly buildings where rockets are prepared horizontally before being transported to the pad, and past the launch complexes themselves, still active infrastructure rather than a museum piece. On the several launch days scheduled each year, public viewing areas open at a safe distance, letting visitors watch a genuine orbital rocket launch from South American soil, a combination most people never think to connect.

Just offshore, the Îles du Salut add a considerably darker layer of history. Devil's Island, the smallest of the three islands, held France's most notorious penal colony from the 1850s until 1953, made internationally famous by Henri Charrière's memoir Papillon and its film adaptations. Boat tours reach the islands from Kourou, walking visitors past crumbling colonial prison structures now reclaimed by tropical vegetation, a stark counterpoint to the space center's forward-looking mission just across the water.

French Guiana's status as a full department of France, and by extension the European Union, using the euro and following French administrative law, makes Kourou one of the more genuinely unusual travel experiences available in South America: rockets built to European Space Agency standards, launched from equatorial rainforest, a short boat ride from a former French penal colony, all technically within EU territory despite sitting thousands of kilometers from Paris.
