Moorea sits close enough to Tahiti, roughly a 30-minute ferry ride from Papeete, that vintage mid-20th-century Tahiti tourism posters occasionally used Moorea's dramatic silhouette to sell the wider destination, a small irony given how distinct the two islands actually are. Its heart-like shape, visible clearly from the air, became a recognizable symbol of French Polynesia well before most visitors could pinpoint exactly which island they were looking at.

Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay cut deep into Moorea's volcanic interior, framed by jagged basalt peaks that rise sharply from the water, and the Belvedere Lookout above both bays offers one of the most photographed views in French Polynesia, twin bays and green ridgelines spread out in a single frame. That landscape gives Moorea a more varied, textured geography than some of its flatter neighboring atolls.

The island offers largely the same overwater bungalow experience that built Bora Bora's global reputation, resorts built directly over the lagoon's shallow, warm water, but typically at a lower price point and without the additional domestic flight Bora Bora requires beyond Tahiti's international airport. For travelers weighing the two, that accessibility often makes Moorea the more practical choice without meaningfully sacrificing the scenery.

Between roughly July and October, humpback whales migrate through Moorea's surrounding waters to breed and give birth, and licensed operators run guided swim excursions during that window, letting visitors enter the water at a respectful distance to observe whales and calves. It's one of the more accessible places in the Pacific to have that kind of encounter, requiring no specialized diving certification, just a guided boat trip and appropriate seasonal timing.

Beyond the water, Moorea's interior supports pineapple plantations that give the island a distinct agricultural identity alongside its beach and lagoon tourism, and local juice and rum production built around that crop adds a small but genuine taste of Moorea beyond its scenery. Combined with its bays, reef, and relative ease of access from Tahiti, it's become one of French Polynesia's most complete single-island stops.
