Riga

Riga holds the largest and most architecturally significant collection of Art Nouveau buildings anywhere in Europe, a fact that surprises most visitors who arrive with no particular expectations of the city beyond "Baltic capital." Roughly a third of the buildings in the city center date to the style's early-20th-century peak, and the concentration on and around Alberta iela — much of it designed by Mikhail Eisenstein, father of the pioneering Soviet filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein — rivals anything found in cities far more associated with the movement, like Vienna or Barcelona.

The Old Town, smaller and denser than Riga's Art Nouveau district, holds the city's medieval core: the House of the Blackheads, a guild hall rebuilt after wartime destruction with a facade dense enough with detail to reward slow viewing, and St. Peter's Church, whose tower gives one of the better rooftop views in the Baltic region over a city that's still relatively low-rise by European capital standards.

The Central Market, housed partly in a set of former Zeppelin hangars relocated from a nearby airfield in the 1930s, is one of the larger and more distinctive markets in Europe — both an architectural curiosity and a genuinely useful, cheap place to eat, closer in spirit to a real local market than a tourist-oriented food hall.

Riga tends to get folded into a broader "Baltic capitals" trip alongside Tallinn and Vilnius, connected by reasonably efficient long-distance buses, and it holds its own within that trio — the strongest architectural density of the three, and a large enough old town and Art Nouveau district that it doesn't feel like the smallest or least substantial stop.

Prices here run well below what most Western European visitors expect from a national capital — closer to Krakow or Budapest than to Stockholm or Copenhagen just across the Baltic Sea, which makes Riga a genuine value pick for travelers willing to go slightly further off the standard circuit.
