Da Nang

The Golden Bridge, opened in 2018 at the Ba Na Hills resort complex above Da Nang, appears to rise directly out of a pair of giant moss-covered stone hands emerging from the hillside, a piece of architecture specifically designed for the kind of striking, shareable photo that's since defined much of the city's modern tourism identity. Within a couple of years of opening, it had become one of the most photographed landmarks in Vietnam, reshaping Da Nang's reputation from a mostly overlooked coastal city into a genuine tourist destination in its own right.

The Marble Mountains, a cluster of five limestone and marble hills just south of the city, each named for one of the five classical elements, hold a honeycomb of caves containing Buddhist shrines and temples, some dating back centuries. Stairs and, for those who prefer to skip the climb, elevators lead visitors up through the caves to viewpoints overlooking the coastline, a genuinely different kind of attraction from the resort-built spectacle of the Golden Bridge just a short drive away.

Da Nang's beaches, particularly My Khe, have drawn increasing international attention over the past decade, wide stretches of sand backed by a rapidly growing skyline of hotels and resorts, a transformation that's happened largely within a single generation. The city was, until relatively recently, more commonly known as a transit stop between Hue and Hoi An than a destination in its own right.

The Dragon Bridge, spanning the Han River through the city center, is shaped like a dragon and breathes actual fire and water on weekend evenings, a piece of civic infrastructure built explicitly as a tourist spectacle, drawing crowds to the riverbanks for the scheduled shows.

Da Nang's position roughly midway between Hue and Hoi An, both significant historical and cultural stops in central Vietnam, has made it an increasingly common base for exploring the wider region, offering modern beach resort infrastructure within a short drive of some of the country's most significant heritage sites.
