Soufrière

The Pitons define Soufrière's skyline and, by extension, much of how Saint Lucia is pictured internationally — two steep volcanic spires, Gros Piton and Petit Piton, rising directly from the sea a short distance apart. Both are the eroded remnants of long-extinct volcanic activity, their sheer, forested slopes distinctive enough to appear on the national flag.

Gros Piton, the shorter but more approachable of the pair, can be climbed with a licensed local guide on a strenuous multi-hour round trip, rewarded with sweeping views back over the coastline. Petit Piton's ascent is considerably steeper and more technical, and isn't typically offered to casual hikers.

The volcanic activity that built the Pitons also left a more accessible legacy nearby: the Sulphur Springs, marketed as the world's only drive-in volcano, where a road leads close enough to an active geothermal crater to see steaming vents and bubbling mud pools without a hike, and mineral-rich mud baths fed by the same water have become a standard add-on to a visit.

Between the two peaks sits Jalousie Beach, a stretch of dark volcanic sand framed on both sides by the Pitons rising almost directly out of the water — one of the more photographed beach settings in the Caribbean, and the anchor for a concentration of high-end, often adults-only resorts built specifically around that view.

That resort concentration has made Soufrière and the surrounding area one of the Caribbean's most established honeymoon destinations, a reputation built over decades on the combination of dramatic volcanic scenery, lush mountainous terrain distinct from flatter neighboring islands, and a cluster of properties designed around privacy and views rather than large-scale resort infrastructure.
