The Golden Gate Bridge's color is a genuine design choice, not a practical default. Officially named International Orange, it was selected by consulting architect Irving Morrow specifically because it complements the surrounding hills and stands out clearly against both the bay's blue-grey water and the fog that regularly rolls through the strait — a US Navy suggestion to paint it black and yellow stripes for ship visibility was seriously considered and rejected.

That fog, often nicknamed Karl the Fog by locals on social media, is as much a part of San Francisco's identity as any single landmark, rolling in through the Golden Gate on summer afternoons even when inland parts of California bake in heat — a genuine microclimate effect that means visitors packing for "California weather" in July often need a jacket.

Alcatraz Island, the former federal prison in the middle of the bay, closed in 1963 and now operates as one of the National Park Service's most popular sites, its cell blocks and the story of the 1962 escape attempt, still officially unsolved, drawing visitors who book the ferry-and-tour combination weeks in advance during busy season.

The city's cable car system, running since the 1870s, remains the only moving National Historic Landmark in the United States — a genuine practical necessity given how steep some of San Francisco's hills are, rather than a preserved tourist novelty, even though most locals now rely on the newer Muni Metro and bus network for daily transport.

Chinatown, established in the 1840s, holds the distinction of being the oldest Chinatown in North America, and it survived a serious threat after the 1906 earthquake and fire, when city officials tried to relocate it to the outskirts before community leaders successfully fought to rebuild on the original site.
