The Las Vegas Strip, the stretch of casino resorts that defines the city's global image, technically sits outside Las Vegas city limits entirely — a quirk of unincorporated Clark County jurisdiction that dates back to casino operators historically preferring county oversight over the city's own, sometimes stricter regulatory reach. Most visitors never notice the distinction, since the Strip functions as the city's identity regardless of the legal boundary running through it.

Las Vegas began as a modest 1905 railroad town in the Mojave Desert, and its transformation into a global entertainment destination accelerated through the mid-20th century as Nevada's legal gambling status drew organized investment and, later, the elaborate themed mega-resorts that define the Strip today — each competing to out-scale the last with fountains, replica landmarks, and increasingly ambitious architecture.

Fremont Street, a few miles north in the older downtown core, offers a genuinely different version of the city — a covered pedestrian corridor under an overhead LED canopy that runs synchronized light shows, generally lower gambling minimums, and an atmosphere closer to the city's mid-20th-century roots than the Strip's newer resorts.

The surrounding Mojave Desert puts genuine natural scale within reach of a city built on artificial spectacle — the Grand Canyon's West Rim, including its glass Skywalk platform extending over the canyon edge, is a manageable day trip, while the more famous and dramatically deeper South Rim requires a longer overnight commitment given the distance involved.

Las Vegas's hotel pricing model, historically built around subsidizing rooms with expected gambling revenue, has shifted in recent decades toward mandatory resort fees covering amenities like Wi-Fi and pool access regardless of use — a real practical detail that changes how the advertised room rate compares to the actual total cost of a stay.
