Maui

The Road to Hana is less a route between two points than a destination in its own right — more than 600 curves and 59 one-lane bridges packed into roughly 100 kilometers of coastal highway along Maui's northeastern shore, engineered in the early 20th century to reach communities that had previously been accessible mainly by boat. Most visitors budget a full day to drive what would take under two hours on a standard highway, stopping at waterfalls, black-sand beaches, and roadside fruit stands along the way.

Haleakalā, the massive shield volcano that makes up most of eastern Maui, draws visitors specifically for sunrise from its summit, over 3,000 meters above sea level, where the crater's otherworldly, largely barren landscape has drawn comparisons to the surface of the moon. The experience has become popular enough that the National Park Service now requires a separate paid reservation just to drive up during the pre-dawn hours.

From roughly December through April, thousands of humpback whales migrate to Maui's warm, shallow waters specifically to breed and give birth, close enough to shore that sightings are common even without a boat, though dedicated whale-watching tours during peak months, typically February and March, offer far more reliable and closer encounters.

Maui's west side includes Lahaina, a historic former whaling town and one-time capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii, which suffered severe destruction in wildfires in August 2023 — one of the deadliest wildfire disasters in modern US history. Recovery has been an ongoing, multi-year process, and visitors specifically planning to spend time in Lahaina should check current conditions and access status before finalizing those plans.

The island's isolation in the middle of the Pacific shapes its economics directly — nearly everything beyond what's grown locally arrives by ship or plane, which keeps grocery and restaurant prices noticeably higher than mainland US destinations, a real budgeting factor worth planning around rather than a minor inconvenience.
