Granada

Granada was founded in 1524 by Spanish colonizer Francisco Hernández de Córdoba on the northwestern shore of Lake Nicaragua, giving it a genuine claim to being one of the oldest European-founded cities still standing on its original site anywhere on the American mainland. That deep colonial history shows directly in the city's brightly painted, single-story colonial architecture, arranged around a central park and cathedral in a layout that's remained recognizable for exactly that reason across five centuries.

Lake Nicaragua, the largest lake in Central America and the body of water Granada sits directly beside, once held a genuinely unusual population of bull sharks living permanently in fresh water, one of the only documented freshwater shark populations anywhere on Earth. Researchers eventually determined the sharks could migrate between the lake and the Caribbean Sea via the San Juan River, though sightings have become far rarer in recent decades due to historic overfishing.

Las Isletas, an archipelago of roughly 365 small islands just offshore from Granada, formed when a violent eruption of the nearby Mombacho volcano scattered debris across the lake's surface centuries ago. Boat tours now wind between the islands, some privately owned and developed with small resorts, others left largely wild and home to birds and howler monkeys, giving visitors an easy, scenic half-day excursion directly from the city.

Mombacho volcano itself, whose eruption created the surrounding islands, now holds a cloud forest reserve near its summit, reachable by a combination of vehicle and hiking trail, offering cooler temperatures and genuinely different flora from the lowland heat of Granada below.

Nicaragua has experienced periodic political tension and instability over the past decade, and while Granada itself has generally remained a stable, tourism-oriented city, checking current government travel advisories before booking is a sensible step given how conditions elsewhere in the country have shifted at various points.
