Bocas del Toro

Bocas del Toro sits on Panama's Caribbean coast, an archipelago of islands that feels culturally and geographically distinct from the country's better-known Pacific side and canal-focused capital. Bocas Town, on Isla Colón, anchors the region with a small grid of wooden Caribbean-style buildings, water taxis, and a nightlife scene built around beachfront bars rather than nightclubs.

Red Frog Beach, on neighboring Bastimentos Island, takes its name from the strawberry poison dart frog, a species barely the size of a thumbnail, vividly red, and genuinely toxic to predators despite its small size. A short jungle boardwalk leads from the boat dock to the beach itself, making it one of the archipelago's most popular half-day tour stops.

The islands' Caribbean-facing coastline also supports a modest but genuine surf scene, with reef and beach breaks around Isla Colón and Bastimentos drawing surfers during the region's two annual swell windows — considerably less crowded than the more internationally known surf destinations on Central America's Pacific coast.

Dolphin Bay, a sheltered stretch of water between islands, hosts a resident population of bottlenose dolphins visible on many of the standard boat tours, though operators increasingly emphasize watching from a respectful distance rather than the closer encounters once common in the area.

Bocas del Toro's slower, more water-based rhythm — getting between islands means a boat, not a road — sets it apart from more infrastructure-heavy Caribbean destinations, rewarding visitors willing to spend several days moving between islands rather than treating it as a quick stopover.
