Taipei 101 held the title of world's tallest building from its completion in 2004 until 2010, standing 508 meters tall, and while the observation decks near its top offer sweeping views over the city, the tower's most talked-about feature sits well below the summit. A 660-tonne steel ball, a tuned mass damper roughly the size of a wrecking ball, hangs suspended between the 87th and 92nd floors, visible to visitors through a window, engineered to counteract swaying from Taiwan's frequent typhoons and earthquakes.

The National Palace Museum houses one of the largest collections of Chinese imperial artifacts in the world, brought to Taiwan from mainland China in 1948 and 1949 as Nationalist forces retreated during the Chinese Civil War. The collection is so extensive, spanning thousands of years of Chinese art and history, that only a small fraction is ever on display at once, with pieces rotated periodically to let visitors see different parts of the holdings over multiple visits.

Taipei's night markets rank among the most extensive in Asia, and Shilin Night Market, the largest and best known, packs food stalls, clothing vendors, and games into a dense maze of alleyways that runs late into the evening. Dishes like stinky tofu, oyster omelets, and bubble tea, itself a Taiwanese invention, all trace back to this kind of night market food culture.

Beitou, a district in northern Taipei, sits on a natural hot spring source that's drawn bathers since the Japanese colonial era in the early 20th century, when the area's public bathhouses were first built. A short metro ride from the city center, it offers a genuinely different pace, thermal valley walks and mineral baths, than the density of downtown Taipei.

Taiwan's political status remains complex and unresolved internationally, operating as a de facto independent, democratically governed island with its own currency, passport, and government, despite mainland China's competing claim over it. That backdrop rarely intrudes on a visit directly, but it's part of what makes Taipei's particular mix, a genuinely modern East Asian capital with its own distinct identity, worth understanding before arriving.
