Boracay

In April 2018, the Philippine government closed Boracay entirely, banning all tourists from an island barely 10 square kilometers in size, after years of unregulated development had pushed sewage discharge and overcrowding to a point officials described as an environmental crisis. The closure lasted six months and funded infrastructure upgrades and stricter building regulations, an unusually drastic move for a destination that had, at the time, been one of the country's biggest tourism earners.

White Beach, the island's main draw, stretches roughly four kilometers along Boracay's western coast, its sand fine and pale enough that it's been compared to powdered sugar, a texture that comes from the specific composition of pulverized coral and shells rather than typical quartz sand. It remains one of the most consistently highly rated beaches in Asia, and the post-closure regulations have kept it noticeably cleaner than in the years leading up to 2018.

Getting to Boracay involves a short multi-step journey, since the island has no airport of its own. Most visitors fly into either Caticlan or the slightly farther Kalibo airport, then take a short tricycle or van transfer to a jetty port, followed by a boat crossing of 10 to 20 minutes to reach the island itself.

Traditional paraw sailboats, outrigger vessels with a design specific to the Philippines, carry visitors out for sunset trips along the coast, their triangular sails catching the last light in a scene that's become one of Boracay's signature images. Island-hopping tours to nearby spots like Crystal Cove and Crocodile Island add snorkeling and smaller, quieter beaches to a typical multi-day stay.

The island's recovery since 2018 has become something of a case study in tourism management, cited by other overcrowded destinations weighing similar interventions. For visitors today, the practical result is simply a cleaner beach and clearer water than existed in Boracay's more chaotic pre-closure years, without losing the lively beachfront bars and restaurants that made the island popular in the first place.
