Whitehaven Beach's sand is roughly 98% pure silica, an unusually high concentration that gives it two genuinely distinctive properties: a brilliant, almost blinding white color, and a texture fine enough to stay cool underfoot even under intense tropical Queensland sun, a real physical sensation that surprises most first-time visitors expecting typical hot beach sand. Among the Whitsundays' 74 islands, Whitehaven is the one that dominates nearly every photo taken of the region.

Heart Reef, a small coral formation that happens to have grown into a naturally heart-shaped outline, sits elsewhere within the same archipelago and is visible only from the air. Scenic flights and helicopter tours over the Whitsundays routinely include a pass over the reef specifically because of its shape, and it's become one of the most recognized individual reef formations in Australia as a direct result.

The Whitsundays sit within the Great Barrier Reef's southern section, giving the islands direct access to reef snorkeling and diving without the longer boat trips required from gateway towns further north like Cairns.
