Rottnest Island, a short ferry ride from Perth, has become genuinely famous well beyond Australia for one specific resident: the quokka, a small native marsupial with a naturally smiling-looking face that's turned taking a quokka selfie into something of an international social media phenomenon, alongside the island's own beaches and car-free layout.

Margaret River, roughly three hours south of Perth, holds one of Australia's most respected wine regions, and its relative proximity to Perth, combined with the city's own quieter tourism profile compared to Sydney or Melbourne, makes a Perth-based trip a genuinely practical way to combine city time with a serious wine region visit without the crowds found in more heavily trafficked Australian wine areas.
