Fraser Island (K'gari)

K'gari, known for much of the last two centuries by the colonial name Fraser Island, is the largest sand island on Earth, stretching over 120 kilometers along the Queensland coast. In 2023, the Queensland government officially restored its traditional name, meaning "paradise" in the language of the Butchulla people, the island's traditional custodians, a name that far predates the shipwreck survivor the older colonial name was taken from.

What makes K'gari genuinely unusual isn't just its scale but what that scale of sand actually supports. Dense rainforest grows directly on the dunes, an ecological rarity for a landform built almost entirely of sand, and the island holds dozens of freshwater lakes, some perched, held in place purely by an impermeable layer beneath the sand rather than fed by groundwater. Lake McKenzie, ringed by brilliant white silica sand, has become the island's signature image, its water so clear and mineral-pure that ordinary items like jewelry or sunscreen aren't recommended before swimming.

The island holds one of the most genetically pure wild dingo populations remaining anywhere in Australia, largely because K'gari's isolation has limited interbreeding with domestic dogs found on the mainland. That purity comes with real responsibility for visitors, since dingoes here remain wild animals rather than tourist attractions, and feeding or approaching them has led to serious incidents in the past, prompting strict rules against any interaction.

No paved roads exist on K'gari, and every bit of travel across the island happens by 4WD vehicle, either self-driven with the right permits and sand-driving experience or, more commonly for visitors, as part of a guided tour. The eastern beach itself functions as a highway at low tide, technically an official road, adding a genuinely unusual driving experience to a visit that most other Australian destinations simply can't offer.

Eli Creek, a fast-flowing freshwater stream emptying directly onto the beach, lets visitors float downstream on the current, a simple, low-effort activity that's become one of the most popular stops on any K'gari day tour, and a fitting small-scale example of how much natural variety this single sand island manages to hold.
