Cradle Mountain

Dove Lake sits directly beneath Cradle Mountain's jagged peak, and on calm mornings the water turns still enough to reflect the mountain almost perfectly across its surface, one of the most photographed views in Tasmania and the anchor point for the park's most popular walk, a roughly 6-kilometer circuit around the lake's edge through ancient rainforest and buttongrass moorland.

That rainforest holds plant lineages tracing back to Gondwana, the ancient supercontinent that once connected Australia, Antarctica, and South America, and species found here share close relatives in South American temperate forests, a genuinely tangible link to a landmass that broke apart tens of millions of years ago. Tasmania's central highlands, including Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park, earned UNESCO World Heritage recognition as part of the Tasmanian Wilderness, one of the last extensive tracts of temperate wilderness left anywhere on Earth.

The Overland Track, a roughly 65-kilometer, 6-day trek connecting Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair, ranks among Australia's most celebrated multi-day wilderness walks, crossing alpine plateaus, ancient forest, and button grass plains under weather that can shift dramatically within a single day regardless of season. Bookings are required and capped during the main walking season, reflecting both the trail's popularity and the park's effort to manage impact on genuinely fragile terrain.

Wildlife sanctuaries near the park let visitors see Tasmanian devils up close, a species facing serious ongoing conservation challenges from a contagious facial tumor disease that's significantly reduced wild populations across the island. Wild devils still inhabit the surrounding bushland, though sightings require patience and typically happen after dark, making sanctuary visits the more reliable way to actually see one.

Cradle Mountain's weather turns genuinely unpredictable even during the summer walking season, and conditions can shift from clear skies to cold rain within hours, a reality that shapes how seriously even short day walks need to be prepared for, regardless of how mild the forecast looks at the trailhead.
