Canberra

Rivalry between Sydney and Melbourne over which city deserved to be Australia's national capital ran so deep after federation in 1901 that the two cities effectively canceled each other out, and the government resolved the standoff by building an entirely new capital from scratch, roughly halfway between them. American architect Walter Burley Griffin won an international design competition for the site in 1912, working from plans and site photographs before ever setting foot in Australia.

The result is a genuinely planned city, organized around artificial Lake Burley Griffin, itself created specifically as part of Griffin's design and only filled in the 1960s after decades of delayed construction. That deliberate planning gives Canberra a layout unlike any other Australian capital, wide formal avenues and clearly zoned districts rather than the organic sprawl of cities that grew up around older ports.

Parliament House, completed in 1988, was designed with a grass-covered roof that visitors can walk directly across, a symbolic choice meant to represent the government sitting beneath the people rather than above them. Underneath that rooftop lawn, the building holds the country's federal parliament chambers, and free guided tours let visitors into areas rarely open to the public in most national capitals.

Canberra holds more free national museums and galleries per capita than any other Australian city, a direct consequence of its role as the seat of federal government and cultural institutions. The Australian War Memorial, combining a museum, archive, and shrine honoring Australians who served in conflict, ranks among the most visited sites in the country, while the National Gallery of Australia holds one of the most significant art collections in the Southern Hemisphere, all without an entry fee.

Despite holding the country's seat of government, Canberra remains genuinely small by capital city standards, and its compact, walkable center around the lake means most major sites sit within a short distance of each other, a rare convenience for a city built essentially to settle an argument between two much larger rivals.
