Krabi

Railay Beach sits cut off entirely from the mainland by sheer limestone cliffs, meaning no road has ever connected it to the rest of Krabi province. Every visitor arrives by longtail boat, a short 10 to 15 minute ride from Ao Nang or Krabi Town, and so does everything else, hotel supplies, restaurant ingredients, even construction materials for the resorts built along its sand. That isolation has kept Railay from developing the kind of dense, road-accessible sprawl found at many other Thai beach destinations.

Those same limestone cliffs that cut Railay off from the road network have made it one of the premier rock climbing destinations in Southeast Asia, with hundreds of established routes ranging from short introductory climbs suited to complete beginners to demanding multi-pitch routes for experienced climbers. Climbing schools operate directly on the beach, and watching climbers scale the dramatic overhangs above the sand has become almost as much a part of the Railay experience as swimming itself.

Krabi's island-hopping tours, typically covering a rotating selection of nearby islands like the Four Islands or the more distant Hong Islands, give access to the same kind of limestone karst scenery and clear water found in more famous spots like Phang Nga Bay, often with fewer crowds since Krabi draws less international attention than Phuket just across the bay.

Tiger Cave Temple, a Buddhist site set atop a steep limestone outcrop outside Krabi Town, requires climbing over 1,200 steps to reach the summit, a genuinely demanding hike rewarded with panoramic views over the surrounding jungle and karst landscape. It's become one of the more physically challenging but consistently recommended non-beach activities in the region.

Krabi generally carries a calmer, less developed atmosphere than Phuket, its neighboring and more internationally famous counterpart, a distinction that draws visitors specifically looking for the same limestone-and-beach scenery associated with southern Thailand, without quite the same scale of nightlife and crowds.
