Luxor

Modern Luxor sits on the site the ancient Egyptians called Thebes, capital of the civilization for long stretches of its history and home to a concentration of temples and tombs dense enough that UNESCO lists the entire area, both riverbanks together, as a single World Heritage Site, "Ancient Thebes with its Necropolis," rather than treating individual monuments separately.

Karnak Temple, on the Nile's east bank, is the largest religious building ever constructed, a complex that grew over roughly 2,000 years as successive pharaohs added their own halls, pylons, and obelisks to what came before. Its Hypostyle Hall alone holds 134 massive columns, some over 20 meters tall, arranged closely enough that walking among them gives a genuine sense of scale no photograph fully captures.

Across the river, the Valley of the Kings holds the rock-cut tombs of dozens of pharaohs, a burial approach chosen specifically to deter the grave robbers who had already stripped most of the earlier pyramid tombs. Howard Carter's 1922 discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb here, remarkably intact despite the boy king's relatively minor historical status, remains the valley's defining find and the reason his treasures now anchor Egypt's national museum collections.

Sunrise hot air balloon flights over the west bank have become one of Luxor's signature experiences, lifting off before dawn to catch the light over the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut's terraced mortuary temple, and the green farmland bordering the Nile, a perspective on the necropolis that's genuinely different from walking through it at ground level.

Luxor works well both as a standalone stop and as one leg of a longer Nile-focused trip, commonly paired with a multi-day cruise south to Aswan or combined with Cairo for a fuller sweep of ancient and modern Egypt in a single visit.
